Caravan
by Jamshid Chorshanbiyev · 2026
This miniature artwork is an enigmatic example of the traditional Uzbek 'Kundji' (Kundal) technique, a craft preserved through the centuries. The style is distinguished by its thick, textured relief patterns and gilding wrought in gold and yellow hues. Rendered in a deeply solemn color palette, the painting depicts a tiny caravan of camels and travelers winding their way through an endless desert at night. The looming sky, consumed by total darkness, is rendered in the dense, tactile texture characteristic of Kundji. Hundreds of flickering orange and golden pinpricks of light—resembling gilded stars or distant campfires—symbolize hope and devotion amidst the night. Thick, dark-gray impasto strokes endow the piece with extraordinary depth and an ancient, timeless allure.
