Old Siyob Bazaar
by Muhammadi · 2026
This work captures a vibrant, bustling moment in the life of Samarkand during the late 19th and early 20th centuries: a busy market day at the foot of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque. At the center of the composition, the majestic, blue-domed ruins of the Bibi-Khanym Mosque—partially dilapidated at the time, yet still retaining its grandeur—reach toward the sky. In the foreground, the full vitality of Eastern life is depicted with great vividness: a throng of merchants and shoppers in colorful robes, camels laden with goods, horses and donkeys, a traditional large-wheeled cart, and market stalls. The artist’s free, energetic, impressionistic brushstrokes allow the viewer to tangibly experience the clamor of the marketplace, the swirling dust, and the warmth of a sunny day. This painting infuses any interior with a rich historical spirit, the authentic vibrancy of the East, and a distinct sense of adventure.
